Every year, as spring approaches, Marrakech lights up with a particular brilliance. The city exhales a captivating perfume, that of the orange blossom, announcing the arrival of the Zahria, a moussem entirely dedicated to this emblematic flower, organized by the Al-Muniya Association of Marrakech. This event celebrates an intangible heritage deeply rooted in Moroccan culture. This regenerated cultural offering aims to gladden the hearts of citizens and move foreign visitors.
La Zahria n'est pas une simple fête; elle est le reflet d'une tradition ancestrale, transmise de génération en génération, principalement par les femmes de Marrakech. The Zahria is not a simple festival; it is the reflection of an ancestral tradition, passed down from generation to generation, mainly by the women of Marrakech. For centuries, these guardians of know-how have perpetuated the art of orange blossom distillation, a ritual that symbolizes the renewal of the cycle of seasons, purity, and joy.
Connue sous le nom de Taqtar Zhar', tout le cérémonial de distillation est un art exigeant et non moins parfumé. Les femmes, parées de blanc, reçoivent chez elles avec soin et reconnaissance la manne printanière des fleurs de bigaradier cueillies par les hommes dans les vergers environnant de la cité ou carrément prélevées des arbres des riads de la Médina. Ces fleurs magiques reposent toute la nuit sur des napes blanches encore une fois pour qu'elles soient placées par la suite dans des alambics en cuivre. La vapeur d'eau, en traversant les pétales, capte l'huile essentielle, ou l'esprit (rûh) produisant une eau florale pure et parfumée. تغدو «الزهرية» - وهي موسم تقطير زهر النارنج - رمزا رقيقا لذلك التحول : عطر تجدد تحمله النساء، ويحتفين به بالحياة وقد استعادت نبضها. إنها مناسبة فرح وهناء، ولحظة مخصوصة تجتمع فيها النساء مرتديات أبهى أثوابهن البيضاء، إشعارًا بالظهر وبدايات تتجدد. ترتفع الصلوات على النبي فتواكب مراحل التقطير خطوة خطوة، وتنسج أجواء تمتزج فيها البهجة بالسكينة، ويغمرها صفاء روحي عميق. وفي الروح ذاتها، روح الاحتفاء والاستقبال، يُرش الضيوف برفق بماء الزهر ؛ إيماءة ضيافة وترحيب، تكرم الوافد وتغمر الجميع بشذى الكرم المغربي الأصيل، وتستيقظ الحواس تباعًا على امتداد هذه المراسم العابقة بالدلالات؛ فتأخذ العين بهجة البياض المتلألئ لأزهار يغمرها نور سماء مراكش، فتبدو كأنها قطع من ضياء نازل على الأغصان، وتستسلم الأذن لزقزقة ألحان الطيور وأنغام التراث العتيق.
Known as Taqtar Zhar, the whole ceremonial of distillation is a demanding and no less fragrant art. The women, dressed in white, receive in their homes with care and gratitude the spring manna of bitter orange flowers picked by men in the surrounding orchards of the city or directly taken from the trees of the Medina's riads. These magical flowers rest all night on white tablecloths once again so that they are later placed in copper stills. The water vapor, crossing the petals, captures the essential oil, or the spirit (rûh) producing a pure and fragrant floral water. Every step, from gathering to distillation and up to the final offering, is carried out with fervor, often accompanied by prayers, chants, and psalmodies dedicating the spiritual dimension of this tradition.
Cependant, ce qui donne à la Zahria toute sa dimension unique, c'est L'Bahja: terme pour exprimer l'allégresse qui nous saisie individuellement et toute la communauté en présence à l'unisson, que l'on ne pourrait traduire facilement, cependant que l'on pourrait saisir intensément, il est important de comprendre qu'il représente une joie intérieure, irradiante, franchement festive, qui s'empare des cœurs et des avenues. L'Bahja durant La Zahria, s'infiltre, omniprésente dans chaque recoin de la Médina. Elle est dans le sourire des femmes qui distillent, dans les regards émerveillés des enfants, dans l'ambiance légère où flotte l'odeur sucrée et enivrante de la fleur. However, what gives the Zahria its unique dimension is L'Bahja: a term to express the elation that grips us individually and the whole community in unison, which cannot be easily translated, but which can be intensely grasped. It represents an inner, radiating, frankly festive joy that takes over hearts and avenues. L'Bahja during La Zahria infiltrates, omnipresent in every corner of the Medina. It is in the smiles of the women distilling, in the amazed eyes of children, in the light atmosphere where the sweet and intoxicating smell of the flower floats. Autrefois cantonnée dans la discrétion des demeures privées et célébrée dans l'intimité des foyers, cette cérémonie a bénéficié d'une réelle transmutation depuis plus d'une décennie, en un événement public grâce à l'ingénierie culturelle de l'Association Al Muniya de Marrakech. Cette médiation vise à protéger et à partager ce matrimoine vivant et vivifiant. Elle a permis à toute la cité et à ses visiteurs d'entrer dans ce monde merveilleux d'arômes, de rites et de poésie, en proposant des ateliers de distillation ouverts au public, des concerts spirituels, des expositions de savoir-faire féminin, des conférences savantes impliquant des écoles, des universités, institutions culturelles et des établissements touristiques. Cette revalorisation active a permis l'inscription de la Zahria sur la liste du patrimoine culturel du monde musulman par l'ICESCO, et des démarches, soutenues par le ministère de la Culture, sont en cours pour son classement par l'UNESCO en tant que patrimoine culturel immatériel de l'humanité.

Formerly confined to the discretion of private residences and celebrated in the intimacy of homes, this ceremony has benefited from a real transmutation for over a decade into a public event thanks to the cultural engineering of the Al Muniya Association of Marrakech. This mediation aims to protect and share this living and vivifying heritage. It allowed the entire city and its visitors to enter this wonderful world of aromas, rites, and poetry, by offering public distillation workshops, spiritual concerts, exhibitions of female know-how, scholarly conferences involving schools, universities, cultural institutions, and tourist establishments. This active revaluation led to the Zahria being inscribed on the ICESCO cultural heritage list of the Muslim world, and efforts, supported by the Ministry of Culture, are underway for its classification by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
